Peterson’s Donut Corner – A Restaurant Review

By Svara Jayasinghe

Peterson’s Donut Corner is a donut shop in Escondido on the corner of Escondido Blvd. We ordered glazed donuts, maple donuts, vanilla donuts with chocolate drizzle, and chocolate donuts with vanilla drizzle.

The donuts are freshly made, the staff are extremely friendly, there is an endless selection to choose from, and the donuts are large in size. My family and I really enjoyed the donuts and definitely recommend Peterson’s Donut Corner.

The Yard House – A Restaurant Review

By Svara Jayasinghe

On July 4th, my family and I went for dinner to the Yard House in Carlsbad. The Yard house is a restaurant that is located in the Shoppes at Carlsbad. It is a sit down restaurant that has a bar included. First, we ordered some appetizers. We ordered some nachos and some boneless, barbecue, buffalo wings. Both of these appetizers were delicious and we all really enjoyed them.

After we finished our appetizers, we started ordering our meals. Simran ordered the BBQ Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger. In Simran’s opinion the burger was a little bit messy and dry. She also says that if you are an athlete, or have a big appetite, you might want to order something a bit bigger as the burger is a little small.

Kiran ordered the Braised Beef Ravioli. She really enjoyed her dish. She says the ravioli and the sauce tasted great, but there was a little too much cheese, but other than that she enjoyed her meal. Mom ordered the Cobb Salad. She loved it. Mom was full after eating the appetizers, but she thought the salad was great. Dad ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. He liked his sandwich because it was flavorful, spicy, and not too dry. For dessert we ordered and shared 3 triple chocolate cakes and some vanilla ice cream. We really enjoyed the food at the Yard House and definitely recommend the restaurant.

The Urge – A Restaurant Review

by Simran Jayasinghe

Around a week ago, our family decided to go to dinner at The Urge. The Urge is a casual place in San Marcos, across the road from Cal State San Marcos. It is a sit-down restaurant that also includes a bowling alley.

I ordered the Burger of the Gods, and it was delicious! Svara ordered the Caesar salad, and Kiran ordered the pub mac and cheese. Kiran did not really like her mac and cheese, as it had a good amount of balsamic sauce on it. Our father got the Piri Piri Steak Salad, and our mother ordered the apricot glazed salmon. Overall, we liked our food, and I would recommend going!

Cracker Barrel – A Restaurant Review

By Kiran Jayasinghe

We went to the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Yuma, Arizona. It had a very old-fashioned, country vibe to it, which we loved. The restaurant also has its own store. They serve breakfast all day, along with their lunch and dinner menus.

I ordered breakfast for dinner, choosing the French Toast Combo, which comes with four slices of French toast, bacon, and eggs. It also comes with a small glass bottle of Cracker Barrel Syrup, which I thought was so cute! The French Toast wasn’t amazing, but it was good enough when doused in syrup. Svara got the grilled cheese sandwich with a side of dumplings (Svara’s in love with dumplings). She says the grilled cheese was good, but the dumplings were a little “soggy and slimy”. Her words, not mine. Simran got the Fresh Start Sampler, which comes with a cup of yogurt, a fresh baked muffin, two eggs, and bacon. She says it was “okay, not amazing, but the muffin was delicious”. My mom got the meatloaf with green beans, carrots, and mashed potatoes. She says the green beans and the carrots were both overcooked, the meatloaf was okay, and the mashed potatoes were good. My dad had the chicken tortilla soup, but it was way too salty (we all tried it).

All in all, we didn’t particularly like what we ate, especially our dad. The service was good, but we don’t highly recommend Cracker Barrel.

Tip Top Meats and European Delicatessen – Restaurant Review

by Svara Jayasinghe

Last Saturday, our Mom decided to check out a place called Tip Top Meats, a small shop and sit down delicatessen in Carlsbad.

We took some time looking at the menu. Dad and Mom both ordered the Sausage Sandwich, with bratwurst, and potato salad. The sandwich was definitely not what dad expected! The bratwurst came separately and the sandwich itself was just lettuce, tomato and bread. He still enjoyed it though! Kiran, had the Roast Beef Sandwich with fries. Simran and I both had the Ham and Cheese sandwich with fries. It was delicious! We must also applaud them for their portions. Their sandwiches were big enough for a swimmers appetite, but not too overloading!

Overall, we loved the food! I would definitely recommend stopping by and trying it out sometime!

The Best Burger Bar – A Restaurant Review

by Svara Jayasinghe

On Day 1 of our New England Trip, we stayed the night in Boston. It was about 10:30 at night, and the only food place open that was close, was called, The Best Burger Bar. The Best Burger Bar is a small restaurant. Even though it was 10:30, it was extremely crowded. I ordered the kids Macaroni and Cheese and got a bottle of apple juice. Kiran ordered the kids Grilled Cheese and got a bottle of apple juice. Simran ordered the Swiss Burger and also, got a bottle of apple juice. My dad ordered the Big Tex, a grilled chicken sandwich, and a salad. Those three items were for my mom and my dad to share. After waiting about 30-45 minutes we got our food.

Back in our hotel room, we opened our food and my mac and cheese wasn’t as appetizing as I would’ve liked. In my opinion, the mac and cheese didn’t taste as good as I expected or liked. With a little ketchup it tasted a little better but if you ever go to The Best Burger Bar I wouldn’t recommend the macaroni and cheese. Overall my macaroni and cheese was so-so. Kiran had a similar opinion for her Grilled Cheese. She said that it didn’t have enough cheese. Overall, she thought that her Grilled Cheese was so-so. Simran had a slightly different opinion with her Swiss Burger. Simran said that her burger was better than okay but not great. She also said that it was tasty. My mom and dad thought that their meal was good.

On a scale from 1 to 10 I would rate The Best Burger Bar a 5 out of 10. If you are in Boston and you happen to find a Best Burger Bar, and you want some casual, different food, I would highly recommend the place.

Tea At The Park

by Kiran Jayasinghe

Simran, Svara, and I had been asking our parents to take us to a tea room as part of Simran’s and my birthday present (from our parents, at least). After making a reservation a few weeks ago, we, as a family, went out to the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort  to have “High Tea at the Park” .  Reservations are needed to have tea at the Park Hyatt, and Mom said that the reservations get booked up very early. When we pulled up to the lobby I was definitely not expecting for the staff to open the car doors for us, or for them to open the hotel doors for us, but they did! I felt so special. We also had no idea where the tea room was in the resort, so we asked the ladies at the front desk. Turns out the high tea room was less than ten feet away! The tea room had four to five tables set up. We were seated at a table set up just for us (the benefits of making a reservation). At the time of the reservation, Mom  reserved the “Traditional Tea”.  There’s also a tea called “Royal Tea”, which is the same the “Traditional Tea” except that they also serve champain. The tea was served, and it came with an assortment of finger foods such as cucumber sandwiches, egg with caviar, smoked salmon with caviar, and more. It also came with scones and desserts.  There were a number of teas to choose from, but we chose a Chocolate and Orange peel tea that was recomended by the server and a more traditional English Breakfast tea. The server poured our tea for us. Each of us had our own small pot of tea and a strainer. Everything was absolutely delicious. My personal favorite was the cucumber sandwhiches. I had one of everything, just like Simran and Svara and my mom and dad. We all agreed the desserts were a little sweet, maybe too sweet, but it was dessert all the same, so I ate all of it. I also had several cups of tea of both the Chocolate with Orange Peel and the English Breakfast, with milk and sugar, of course.  My dad liked the Chocolate with Orange peel tea which remninded him of a Christmas tea, and I agree with him. When we were finished, the server, who was very kind, decided to give us a few extra scones and desserts to take home (yay, more!).

Overall, the food was great, the tea was a-MAZ-ing, and the service was also over the top. Our server said that the Tea at the Park is known as one of the best in San Diego, and after trying it out, I pretty sure that’s true.  We all enjoyed our experience at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort Tea Room and I’m sure we’ll go again!

July 31st was our grandmother’s birthday. I’m not going to tell you how old she turned, but I can tell you that we decided to go out to dinner to celebrate. We went to PF Changs, at the Pike, in Long Beach. The restaurant is right by the water, and you can see boats go in and out of the little harbor. The Pike is a very busy place, so it’s best to get Valet Parking. After the car was taken, we met our uncle inside. That was one of the highlights, because our uncle is almost always out of town, or at work, and we never get to spend time with him! The restaurant wasn’t crowded at all, and we got a table quickly. To drink, we three (Kiran, Simran, and Svara) had water, and so did our uncle. Our mom, grandpa, and grandma had virgin Pina Coladas, and our dad had a beer. Since we love Pina Coladas, we each had a few sips from our mom’s. We all agreed that there was a little too much coconut, and we’ve had better. While we were tasting Pina Coladas and talking like food experts, our dad was ordering food. We had white rice, noodles, firecracker chicken, sweet chicken, garlic beans, and Mongolian beef. Although we expected the firecracker chicken to be spicy, it  wasn’t spicy at all, and it was delicious. The Mongolian beef was great, and our mom and dad just loved the garlic beans. All of us cleaned our plates, and we had to order another dish of Mongolian Beef, firecracker chicken, and noodles. But there was still something to come, even after all of that – dessert! The staff served our grandmother a scoop of ice cream with fried banana. None of the other adults had dessert. The three of us had a “great wall of chocolate” , a huge slice of chocolate cake with 2 scoops of ice cream and raspberry syrup. It was very rich, but we finished almost all of it! We all loved our visit to PF Changs (as we always do) and I think you will too!

China Wokery – A Restaurant Review

I love Hot and sour Soup. My parents love Hot and Sour Soup. Everyone in our family loves hot and sour soup. The go – to place for our family to have hot and sour soup is China Wokery, at the Restaurant Row in San Marcos. About a week ago, we were celebrating our parents 18th wedding anniversary with our grandparents, and of course we had to go to China Wokery! When we got there, we were expecting it to be busy because it was a Saturday night, but there weren’t many people, probably because it was 8:00 o’clock at night and most people had already had dinner. We were seated quickly. We ordered Fried Rice, White Rice, Singapore Noodles, Kung Pow Chicken, Orange Chicken, and of course, a big pot of Hot and Sour soup to share.  Our parents and grandparents loved the Singapore Noodles, and my sisters and I loved the Orange Chicken. These are dishes we order every time we visit! We had a wonderful dinner, and hope to come back many more times!

India Princess – A Restaurant Review

By Kiran Jayasinghe

Buffets are my favorite style of eating. I love any type of buffet.  About a month ago, to celebrate Mother’s Day, my family went to India Princess, including my grandparents, for their Champagne Buffet.

The restaurant is relatively small. It has a few pieces of Indian art, but not much. We expected a bit more.

The food was great. My grandparents and Mom all had mango lassi to drink, my father had a diet soda, and my sisters and I had water. I had a taste of the mango lassi – I thought it was really nice. My sisters thought the the buffet has a decent number of choices, but all of us liked the tandoori chicken the best, and I particularly liked the homemade raita. There’s also white rice, biriyani, curries, naan, chutney, and more. The naan can be ordered in two different flavors, plain and garlic. I had a lot of naan, with the tofu tikka masala. For dessert, the buffet offers fruit and mango pudding.

The India Princess is located on Restaurant Row in San Marcos, CA. Their Address is 1020 W. San Marcos Blvd, Suite 100, San Marcos, CA 92078.  For more information visit the India Princess website.
